Steve Smith, the Australian captain, won the toss and decided to start the innings at the Gadaffi Stadium in Lahore. Australia started strong, taking Phil Salt and Jamie Smith in the first six overs.But the real trouble began when Ben Duckett and Joe Root showed their skills in a 158-run partnership. Root (78 balls, 68 runs) got a century, but Duckett wasn’t about to let his arch-rivals off the hook. He bowled the Kangaroos out for 165.
But with a team getting knocked out of the tournament pretty often, England couldn’t keep the momentum going and ended up with a total of just 351 runs in their 50 overs.
Australia also had a shaky start, losing Travis Head and captain Steve Smith in the first five overs.But then Manus Labuschagne and Matt Short built a partnership that lasted until the 20th over, helping the team get out of the rut. But after Labuschagne and Short got out in quick succession, it was up to Josh Inglis (120 off 86 balls) and Alex Carey (69 off 63 balls) to really go after the England bowlers. They made sure the game was going one way, and in the end, Australia won with 15 balls left in the match. Glenn Maxwell and Josh Inglis were still not out.
